Advents - 'PERSONA MELODIES' - EP Review

Do you miss the glorious scene days dominated by bands with mysterious plural noun names that often led to all sorts of random ambiguous search results. You know exactly what I mean, the djenty metalcore goodness of Architects, Currents and Monuments, all the Caskets, Secrets and Idols of the world, an inexhaustible dictionary of immortal core legends. Fear not, for we have a fantastic new addition to the list in the face of the rising NYC newcore outfit Advents who have just dropped their killer new EP PERSONA MELODIES and if we are to judge them by these 4 tracks, this is a name you should pay attention to.

In my line of "work", there is nothing better than starting the year with underdogs punching above their weight. The modern metal scene is yet to learn more about Advents but since their inception in 2021 these guys have dropped a solid self-titled EP and a collab single 'Match My Misery' with my personal favourites Afterglow (whose debut LP is on its way next week). Now, to give 2024 the right kickstart we get PERSONA MELODIES which is the perfect second step forward, an all-round upgrade on their otherwise outstanding debut, a powerful statement of intent from what is coming ahead.

Advents consist of Anthony Spizzirro (vocals), Kevin Chapilliquen (guitars), Sebastian Ferlin (guitars), Christian Vernaza (bass) and Joe Koza (drums) and describe themselves as merging "hard-hitting aggression with polished melody, interweaving each element of their sound both intentionally and unapologetically." They also highlight passion and tenacity at the core of their music and I am tempted to say that you would struggle to find a more intense and emotive rising act in the scene right now. The entire EP is just relentless, squeezing every bit of energy, breath and sweat left with absolutely no hesitation. If their debut Advents (2022) was merely an impressive introduction hinting at huge potential and bright future, PERSONA MELODIES is the uncompromising proof that the quintet means serious business. Every element of their music from writing and arrangement to mixing and videography is taken up a notch, rising the bar even higher. The tracks are invigorating and pulsating, reminiscent of classic UK metalcore legends like Architects, While She Sleeps and Bury Tomorrow, whilst also boasting infectious hooks and modern production à la Wage War, Memphis May Fire and I Prevail, all mere examples to place and otherwise perfectly unique and already self-aware act that is just getting started.

Although fairly short at just over 12 minutes, the EP is more than sufficient to understand exactly who Advents are and what they are capable of, each of the four singles revealing a new nuance of their piece of newcore brilliance. PERSONA MELODIES opens with the driving, djenty, industrialised rager 'RED THIRTEEN' before diving into the uncontrollable, deathcore-inspired psychosis that is 'LCD'. The third track 'CHROMA' is arguably Advents at their most creative and diverse selves that we have seen so far, expanding melodies, vocal range and sudden changes in pace with remarkable ease. And then 'NEVER GAME OVER' gives the EP the forceful and sweaty finale it needs to seal the deal.

Just like with the previous Advents, I am certain more metalcore goodness is on its way fairly soon and am thrilled to see where the guys go next. The talent, drive and passion are truly impecable and if they are to follow the direction set by PERSONA MELODIES, I am certain we will be looking at a future arena headlined and genre favourite very, very soon.
